Recognized as one of the “factories” of genre cinema worldwide (and updated every year with the celebration of the Sitges Festival and its fan phenomenon), Catalonia and its creative capacity go beyond the topics of horror and fantasy. Catalan talent has a long tradition in narratives with a surrealist feel and motifs that do not ignore black humor and sarcasm, and that sprinkle various styles and perspectives, always seeking the estrangement and surprise of the viewer. This has generated creative impulses with total freedom when it comes to subverting and paraphrasing the conventions of the genre, from the writers Pere Calders or Quim Monzó, through Vicente Aranda of Fata morgana or The bloody bride (one of the Tarantino's favorite films and one of his inspirations for Kill Bill) or the REC saga itself (by Paco Plaza & Jaume Balagueró). In “Per Tots Sants, castanyes i espants!” We present how this strange humor and this creative freedom permeate several narratives: dare to learn Catalan from the genre rom-com of The Year of the Plague or the seven stories that invite us to abandon this society.
